What a name! If you’re a musician putting that monkier (by birth) name out there, you’d best be able to craft a tune.
Came across “Tickets to Crickets,” a track off Ferraby’s self-titled EP today, after reading references to a Elliott Smith/Rufus Wainwright hybrid kind of sound (I couldn’t click on the link to his myspace fast enough, let me tell you — I’m so predictable). Hints of back-home Nashville honky-tonk laced with sharp pop sensibilities, Ferraby’s music is something a little Ben Folds, the dear Mr. Wainwright, Hank Williams and, yes, Elliott, if Mr. Smith woke up one morning loving life and all it allows.
The sound is rich and, cliched as the expression is, timeless. Just flatout good.
I think I’m going to be hooked — and considering the Internet hype, I’m going to be following Ferraby’s rise in the scene.
Go listen.

awesome choice. Ferraby is the best new thing in my life.
In most cases of hearing someone new, I make a note of the name and remind myself to investigate soon. With Ferraby, it was a “Do not pass go, do not collect $200, listen to him NOW” situation. Odd and awesome at the same time.
